Anthony Mackie to Star in Broadway Revival of Macbeth in 2027
Anthony Mackie will return to Broadway after a 16-year absence to lead director Max Webster's immersive revival of Macbeth in spring 2027.

Anthony Mackie will return to Broadway in spring 2027 to play the title role in William Shakespeare's Macbeth, marking his first appearance on the New York stage since 2010.
According to a report from Deadline's Baz Bamigboye, the staging will be directed by Max Webster. Webster previously directed an acclaimed revival of the tragedy starring David Tennant and Cush Jumbo at London's Donmar Warehouse in late 2023, which later transferred to the West End's Harold Pinter Theatre for an 11-week run. The staging uses binaural sound design created by Gareth Fry, delivered to audiences through headphones.
Timeline and Preparations
Rehearsals are scheduled to begin in February 2027, with previews targeted for late March or early April 2027. The limited run is expected to conclude in July 2027. A Broadway venue has not yet been announced, and casting is underway for Lady Macbeth and supporting roles, with the production seeking an all-American ensemble.
Mackie's interest in returning to the stage developed while attending weekend theatre performances in London during the filming of Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday.
"I started as a theater kid," Mackie told Deadline. "Acting has been my passion since I was seven. And now to be able to do this at this level in this space, not many people can say they played Macbeth on Broadway."
To prepare vocally and physically for the role, Mackie is training with his longtime Juilliard coach, Richard Feldman.
Screen Commitments
Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plans to coordinate the Broadway engagement around wrapping work on Avengers: Secret Wars. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release in December 2026.
Mackie also stars in and executive produces season 3 of Peacock's Twisted Metal, and his eight-episode Apple TV+ series, 12 12 12, is scheduled to premiere on November 13, 2026. Mackie last appeared on Broadway in 2010 in Martin McDonagh's A Behanding in Spokane.
