J. Todd Anderson, Storyboard Artist for the Coen Brothers, Dies at 67
Veteran storyboard artist J. Todd Anderson, who visually mapped classic films including Fargo and The Big Lebowski, has died at 67.

J. Todd Anderson, the storyboard artist who illustrated shot-by-shot sequences for decades of American cinema, has died at age 67. Anderson died of metastatic cancer at UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange County, California, with his sister Kimberly Patterson at his side.
Patterson confirmed his death to the non-profit arts organization FilmDayton, followed by reporting from trade publications Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Early database listings recorded his death on October 1, 2026, while podcast co-host George Willeman stated that Anderson died on October 2.
Decades with the Coen Brothers
Anderson worked with filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen for nearly forty years. His collaboration with the brothers began on Raising Arizona (1987) and spanned every film they made together, including Miller's Crossing, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, True Grit, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
In 1996's Fargo, Anderson also appeared on screen as the murdered motorist credited as "Victim in Field." The shot of his character lying face down in the snow wearing a red parka was used on the film's promotional poster.
Anderson continued working on the brothers' solo projects, illustrating Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021) and Ethan Coen's Drive-Away Dolls (2024) and Honey Don't!. His career included three Art Directors Guild Award nominations for Hail, Caesar!, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Directing and Additional Credits
Born in Springfield, Ohio, Anderson studied at Wright State University in Dayton before entering the film industry. Beyond his work with the Coens, his storyboard credits included The Nice Guys, Twister, The Addams Family, Whip It, and The Predator.
Anderson directed two feature films: The Naked Man (1998), which he co-wrote with Ethan Coen, and My Mummy (2008).
He also co-hosted the WYSO radio show and podcast Filmically Perfect with film archivist George Willeman and Niki Dakota. Willeman noted that the two had met recently to discuss reviving the program before Anderson's condition worsened.
