Touchscreen MacBook Pro Planned for Fall Launch With Lighter Chassis, Gurman Reports
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple plans to introduce redesigned, lighter 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with OLED touchscreens as early as October or November 2026.

Apple is preparing to introduce redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros featuring touchscreen OLED panels as early as late October or November 2026, according to reporting from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
Redesigned Chassis and Weight Reduction
Adding digitizer glass and touch sensors typically increases laptop weight, but Gurman reports that Apple reengineered the laptops' interiors. By miniaturizing parts and rearranging internal components, Apple designed the revised machines to be significantly lighter and easier to carry.
Current 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations weigh between 3.4 and 3.56 pounds, while 16-inch models reach up to 4.8 pounds. By comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air weighs 2.7 pounds and the 15-inch model weighs 3.3 pounds. Exact final dimensions and weight targets for the redesigned laptops have not been disclosed.
The redesign also alters the screen housing. The existing display notch is reportedly being replaced with a Dynamic Island cutout. Internally codenamed K114 and K116, the laptops will retain physical keyboards and trackpads rather than adopting a convertible tablet-hybrid form factor.
macOS 27.2 Touch Adjustments
Apple is testing the upcoming hardware internally on macOS 27.2, which is currently in developer beta.
The software update reportedly incorporates interface adjustments tailored for finger input, expanding touch targets for interactive elements while maintaining standard pointer precision for trackpad navigation.
Processor Discrepancies and Launch Window
Reports differ regarding the silicon planned for the hardware. Gurman reports the touchscreen models will use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, bypassing higher-end M6 processors ahead of an expected M7 generation in early 2027. In contrast, outlets such as GSMArena report expectations of M6 or M5 Ultra chips.
Product naming and retail details remain unconfirmed. Observers have questioned whether Apple will retain the MacBook Pro moniker or introduce a higher tier, such as MacBook Ultra. Official pricing has not been disclosed, though analysts expect OLED touch displays to increase costs over current models.
Apple has not officially announced a touchscreen laptop, an OLED MacBook Pro, or a release date. The company has a rumored smart home hardware event on October 13, 2026, and is scheduled to ship the iPhone Duo on October 23. If Gurman's timeline holds, an announcement for the touchscreen laptops and an accompanying 8.3-inch OLED iPad mini could arrive before the end of November.
