Sony's State of Play Dropped a Wild LEGO PS1 and a Scary Until Dawn Sequel

Sony just wrapped a packed State of Play, and while everyone expected another Final Fantasy VII Revelation update, the show quietly turned into one of the biggest PS5 announcements of the year. Between a full horror sequel, an expansion for one of 2025's best games, and an honest to goodness LEGO PlayStation console, there was a lot to process in under an hour.

Until Dawn 2 Is Real, and It's Going Somewhere New

The headline reveal was Until Dawn 2, set for January 28, 2027 on PS5. Developer Firesprite is stepping in with a new cast and a new setting, trading the original's snowbound mountain lodge for a tropical island where a group of ghost hunters gets more than they bargained for. Sony didn't show much gameplay, but the tonal shift alone has horror fans buzzing about how different a sequel to one of PlayStation's defining choice-driven games can look.

It landed in the same show that gave Final Fantasy VII Revelation its own extended gameplay presentation, showing off world exploration, airship travel, and skydiving mechanics ahead of its April 2027 release. Ghost of Yotei and Monster Hunter Wilds Both Get Meaty Expansions

That's a quick turnaround for a game that hasn't been out long, and it suggests Sony wants to keep the samurai adventure in the conversation heading into the holidays.

Monster Hunter Wilds is also getting bigger with an expansion called Ascendance, due sometime in 2027, adding new weapons, armor, abilities, and monsters to hunt. Capcom didn't share a firm release date, but the announcement alone confirms Wilds is getting the same long tail of post launch content that made Monster Hunter World a multi-year hit.

The LEGO PlayStation Console Nobody Saw Coming

Then there was the genuine surprise of the night: a LEGO PlayStation console set, built as a plastic brick replica of the original PS1 complete with hidden easter eggs and small dioramas inside. Sony hasn't announced a price or release date yet, but the reveal alone dominated social media reactions during the show, especially from anyone who grew up with the original 1994 console.

Sony also teased a limited edition DualSense controller tied to GTA 6, timed neatly around Rockstar's now confirmed November 19 release date for the game. Expect more hardware bundle details as that launch gets closer.

Smaller Games Worth Watching From the Show

Beyond the headline names, the State of Play made room for a wide spread of smaller titles. Double Fine's puzzle-adventure Keeper shadow dropped the same day as the show, Metro 2039 got its first PlayStation showcase as a straightforward shooter due February 4, 2027, and Maneater 2 confirmed a 2027 window as the follow-up to the 2020 shark simulator. On the PlayStation Plus side, the Classics Catalog picked up Mega Man X and the original Ratchet & Clank, a nice bonus for anyone still working through this month's surprise PS Plus pick.

Sony's Japan focused segment leaned into anime and RPG crossovers, including a Fate/Extra remake, a Dragon Quest Monsters entry, and a Blue Lock collaboration inside the online soccer game Rematch. None of it had the same viral pull as the LEGO console, but it showed how wide Sony is casting its net for 2027.

Between Until Dawn 2, the Ghost of Yotei expansion, and a genuinely unexpected toy announcement, this State of Play did more to set the PS5's agenda for the next 18 months than most people expected walking in. If nothing else, it proved Sony still knows how to save a surprise for the end of a show.
