Sony Just Confirmed Until Dawn 2, and Horror Fans Are Losing Their Minds

Sony used its September State of Play to drop one of the biggest surprises of the year: a full sequel to Until Dawn is officially in development, and it looks like Supermassive Games is going right back to what made the original a cult classic. The ghost-hunting horror game follows a new crew stranded on the fictional Akishima Island, where a decades-old secret starts picking them off one by one.

Until Dawn 2 Leads a Stacked PlayStation Showcase

The Until Dawn 2 reveal trailer leaned hard into atmosphere over jump scares, showing a group of twenty-somethings arriving on Akishima Island for what starts as a low-key getaway. Sony hasn't locked in a release window yet, but the studio confirmed the game will keep the branching-choice structure that turned the first Until Dawn into one of the most replayed horror games on PS4. Given how well the 2024 remake sold on PS5, a sequel was really only a matter of time, and Sony clearly wanted it to headline this State of Play rather than get buried in the middle of the show.

Until Dawn 2 wasn't the only PS5 exclusive getting fresh attention. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's release date was reconfirmed during the same broadcast, and Sony used the moment to show off a new HD-2D spin-off called Final Fantasy Resonance, complete with a demo that lets players fight Sephiroth right now.

Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yotei Get Meaty Updates

Marvel's Wolverine is now locked for a September 15 release, and the new trailer shifted focus away from Logan's healing factor and toward Bolivar Trask's Sentinel program, hinting at a much bigger mutant-hunting threat than early trailers suggested. It's a smart pivot: everyone already knows Wolverine can take a beating, so showing the machines built specifically to hunt mutants raises the stakes in a way pure claw-slicing footage couldn't.

Ghost of Yotei picked up two announcements in one segment. A hardcore roguelite survival mode arrives October 1, letting players run through the game with permadeath rules and a rotating cast of playable characters instead of just Atsu. The same day brings Ghosts of Sekigahara, a story expansion that digs into Atsu's past across new areas of Ezo, with new enemies, weapons, and armor sets to unlock. For a game some worried might fade quietly after launch, Sony is clearly treating Ghost of Yotei as a long-term platform.

Smaller Reveals Rockstar and Xbox Fans Will Still Care About

Buried among the bigger reveals was a small detail with an outsized amount of buzz: limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers. Preorders for the white-and-black iridescent design open September 10, with shipping set for November 19, well ahead of the game itself. It's the clearest sign yet that Sony and Rockstar are treating GTA 6's release as a platform-defining moment worth building merchandise around more than a year out.

Elsewhere, PlayStation Plus subscribers are getting Mycopunk added to the Extra and Premium tiers, while the Classics library grows with Mega Man X Command Mission, Dino Crisis 2, and the original Ratchet and Clank. It's a smaller update than the headline reveals, but it follows the same pattern Sony set with October's surprise PS Plus pick: keep the subscription service stocked while the big first-party games take their time.

What's Next for PS5 Owners

Sony also confirmed a major expansion for Crimson Desert titled Charting the Unknown, arriving October 15 and following three new characters through the open world. And in a genuinely unexpected turn, the show closed with a physical collectible: a Lego PlayStation console set with more than 1,900 pieces and an internal diorama, giving longtime fans something to build while they wait for Until Dawn 2 news to trickle out.

Sony packed in more than a dozen additional announcements, from Konami's Rev. Noir and Rhapsody in Scarlet to a Double Fine game called Keeper that's available today, starring a sentient lighthouse of all things. Between Until Dawn 2, the Ghost of Yotei expansion, and a steady stream of PS Plus additions, this State of Play made one thing clear: Sony isn't waiting around for GTA 6 to carry its 2026 and 2027 lineup.
