A closed Oval Office meeting between Donald Trump and Elon Musk in December 2025 included hours of questions directed at xAI's Grok chatbot, including inquiries about potential fallout from capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, according to reporting from TIME and TechCrunch.

The session occurred roughly one month before U.S. forces seized Maduro in Caracas on January 3, 2026, detaining him in New York on federal drug-related charges. An official present said Trump queried the commercial artificial intelligence tool on his presidency, his legacy, and how the Venezuelan public would respond if the U.S. captured Maduro.

Hypothetical Queries and Foreign Policy Discussions

Grok reportedly answered that Maduro was a "repressive and deeply unpopular dictator" and predicted many Venezuelans would celebrate his removal. When street celebrations were later reported following the January 3 raid, officials said Trump called the chatbot's foresight "ingenious."

While some headlines characterized Grok as having actively encouraged the capture, underlying reports describe the chatbot responding to a hypothetical query rather than proposing or drafting military operational plans. The precise extent to which Grok's output determined or accelerated Trump's decision remains unconfirmed, as does whether national security advisers raised objections during or after the exchange.

Preexisting Actions and Expanding Defense Roles

Trump had already authorized military action in the region prior to the December meeting. In September 2025, he ordered missile strikes targeting Venezuelan vessels accused of trafficking drugs. Musk had departed his formal administration role roughly seven months before the December meeting, though he continued to engage with Trump. Around that period, Trump also defended computing infrastructure expansion on Truth Social, stating that communities avoiding data centers would end up "backwards and poor" and calling on them to "let Data Reign."

The Oval Office session documents an instance of a sitting president consulting a commercial generative AI tool during foreign policy deliberations. Defense integrations expanded further the following year; in July 2026, Pentagon AI leadership disclosed that Grok had been utilized for strike and deployment targeting workflows in military contexts.
