ChatGPT Is Putting Visual Ads Directly Into Image Generation
OpenAI will begin testing visual advertisements below the loading indicator while free users wait for images to generate.

Free-tier ChatGPT users will soon see visual advertisements while waiting for the platform to create images. OpenAI announced on October 5, 2026, that it will test a new visual ad format in the United States later in October, placing commercial imagery alongside the image creation workflow.
How the Visual Format Works
The placements appear below the loading progress indicator while ChatGPT processes an image prompt. OpenAI stated that the ads will remain separate from the generated image and will be clearly labeled. The company emphasized that advertising content will not influence ChatGPT's answers or outputs.
Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Enterprise tiers will not see advertisements. OpenAI defended introducing ads to free users, stating that commercial revenue helps bring the benefits of artificial intelligence to a broader audience.
Measurement and Brand Safety Integrations
OpenAI is pairing the visual rollout with measurement and tracking integrations. The company partnered with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science to evaluate brand suitability and safety guardrails, noting that partner systems will not receive access to private user conversations. Placement guardrails are designed to prevent ads from appearing during emotionally vulnerable or sensitive conversational contexts.
For attribution, OpenAI integrated conversion tracking tools with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp. Its attribution partner roster includes AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Triple Whale, Kochava, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Singular, Airbridge, and Tenjin, alongside lift-experiment partners Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic.
Ad Revenue Growth
The visual format expands on the ad placements OpenAI introduced when it began selling ads in ChatGPT in February 2026. Since then, ChatGPT Ads has reportedly surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue in under 200 days, supported by 1.2 billion weekly active users globally.
Advertising industry analysts note the operational contrast between traditional search engines and conversational chatbots. Shamsul Chowdhury, executive vice president of paid social at Zeno Group, noted that roughly 2.5 billion prompts occur globally each day on ChatGPT, compared to about 15 billion daily searches on Google.
OpenAI shared early advertiser metrics from its initial ad partners, reporting a 15.3% lower acquisition cost for WeightWatchers compared to its paid-search benchmark, 67% incremental purchases from new customers for Dose, and 93% new visitors for Portland Leather.
Regulatory Requirements in Europe
The expansion comes alongside increased regulatory scrutiny. After OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT ads across 31 European countries in late August 2026, the European Commission designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine under the Digital Services Act on August 31, citing 159.1 million monthly active users in the European Union.
That regulatory designation requires OpenAI to maintain a public repository of ads by January 2027. For now, the visual ad test remains limited to an initial group of advertisers in the United States, with exact launch dates later in October and international expansion timelines not yet confirmed.
