Can a 19-Year-Old Convince You to Buy a $3,499 AI Appliance?

On October 5, 2026, San Francisco startup Ghost emerged from stealth with an $11 million seed round led by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz and announced a dedicated personal AI computer called Core, priced at $3,499.

Founder and chief executive Zain Javaid, 19, argues that personal AI agents should operate on user-owned hardware rather than remote cloud data centers. Javaid, who began coding at age nine, traded at a hedge fund at 14, and worked as a quantitative analyst at Millennium, founded Ghost in 2025.

Local Hardware and Encrypted Execution

Ghost previously released a desktop browser companion extension in February 2026. With Core, the startup is shifting to proprietary hardware designed to execute tasks locally and encrypt data so user information remains private from third parties.

"Personal agents will be the largest consumer product category to come out of AI. Everyone will have one," Javaid said. "We believe the best way to build this is to redefine the computer itself, from the hardware to the operating system to the agent. And that the intelligence should be owned entirely by you."

Early investors in Ghost include Chris Zarou of Backwards Capital, Audacious Ventures, Antler, and EWOR. A promotional social media post from TechCrunch briefly misstated the seed funding as $11 billion, though reporting confirmed the round at $11 million.

Unanswered Specifications and Timelines

Despite the $3,499 price tag, specific technical details about Core remain undisclosed. Ghost has not released details regarding the processor architecture, memory, or thermal system. Delivery timelines, production scale, and confirmed shipping dates for the device also remain unannounced.
