Amazon Kindle Aluminum Review: Premium Metal Squeezed by a $190 Price Tag

Amazon gave its base 6-inch e-reader a metal chassis and flush glass screen, but at $189.99 without waterproofing or warm lighting, the price is tough to justify.

Amazon added a metal chassis to its base e-reader lineup on October 1, replacing lightweight textured plastic with stamped aluminum. At $189.99, however, initial reviews show the Kindle Aluminum sitting in an awkward pricing slot right below the Paperwhite.

The Kindle Aluminum includes 32 GB of storage, no lockscreen ads, and a flush-front glass screen over its 6-inch, 300 ppi monochrome E Ink panel. It weighs 140 grams, measures 6.8 mm thick, and uses a rear housing built from 80 percent recycled aluminum with a matte finish in Alpine Sky Blue or Seaglass Green.

Design Changes and Reading Hardware

Amazon relocated the power button from the bottom edge to the upper right side, eliminating accidental sleep presses when resting the reader on a finger. Amazon also claims the device opens books roughly 30 percent faster than the previous generation.

The company picked stamped aluminum over CNC milling for manufacturing speed, reducing per-unit casing fabrication from up to 30 minutes down to seconds. Amazon Vice President of Kindle Kevin Keith confirmed the 2026 models also include user-replaceable batteries to satisfy EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542.

The underlying reading hardware matches the standard entry-level Kindle. The front illumination relies on standard white LEDs without adjustable color warmth. The device also lacks an IPX8 water resistance rating, leaving it unprotected against pool or bath splashes.

Pricing Squeeze Against the Kindle Paperwhite

In an October 12 review, WIRED writer Nena Farrell noted that while the Alpine Sky blue finish and metal chassis feel upscale, the actual reading experience gives little reason to replace a functioning Kindle.

Reviewer Chalid framed the issue around product positioning, observing that the main problem is Amazon's asking price and the hardware features intentionally left out to keep the Paperwhite higher in the line.

The standard 16 GB plastic Kindle sells for $149.99 with lockscreen ads, or $169.99 without them. Moving up to the Kindle Aluminum costs $20 more than the ad-free plastic model to get a metal case and double the storage. Just $10 above the Aluminum, the 7-inch Kindle Paperwhite sits at $199.99 with warm lighting, a larger screen, and water resistance.

Magnetic Accessories and Buying Decisions

Amazon built dedicated magnetic accessories for the device, including the $34.99 Kindle Click Bluetooth remote for hands-free page turns and a $79.99 Page-Turn Cover with physical buttons.

The compact 6-inch footprint gives the Kindle Aluminum an advantage for travel pockets and small bags. For readers prioritizing display comfort and water resistance over aluminum casing, the October 28 release of the updated Paperwhite lineup makes the $189.99 price tag difficult to recommend.
