Mixtape Wins Game of the Year at 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards
Melbourne studio Beethoven & Dinosaur secured Game of the Year, Excellence in Visual Art, and Excellence in Sound Design at the 2026 AGDAs.

Melbourne studio Beethoven & Dinosaur took home Game of the Year for Mixtape at the 2026 Australian Game Developer Awards (AGDAs), held at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
Alongside the night's top honor, Mixtape won Excellence in Visual Art and Excellence in Sound Design. Mixtape entered the ceremony tied with Tempo Lab Games' Bits & Bops for the most nominations of the year, with both titles earning five category nods.
The Award Race
Organized annually by the Interactive Games and Entertainment Association (IGEA), the AGDAs took place during Melbourne International Games Week at the conclusion of the Games Connect Asia Pacific (GCAP) conference. The 2026 ceremony ran as an afternoon showcase starting at 3:00 PM.
Mixtape won Game of the Year from a field of four finalists that included Aether & Iron (Chaos Theory Games with Seismic Squirrel), Go-Go Town! (Prideful Sloth), and Momento (Fat Alien Cat & Nomo Studio).
"Mixtape was the outcome of an amazingly talented team," said Beethoven & Dinosaur director Johnny Galvatron. "To go from wanting to make a game around Devo to creating something that resonates with so many people is mind blowing. We're lucky to be part of such a talented community, and I'm so proud of Mixtape and my team."
AGDA judges described the title as "a triumph in virtual storytelling, pairing a distinct visual identity with heartfelt music to deliver one of the most memorable experiences in recent memory."
Soundtrack and Critical Reception
Released commercially on May 7, 2026, Mixtape features a licensed soundtrack that includes music from Devo, The Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, and Iggy Pop, according to reporting by IGN. Outlets also noted strong critical reception for the title, citing an 86 Metascore on PlayStation 5 and an OpenCritic Top Critic average of 85.
IGEA CEO Ron Curry praised the depth of the local industry during the event: "Every year I watch our industry punch above its weight, and every year it finds a way to punch harder. These finalists are proof; we have ambition, craft and heart from studios of every size, going toe-to-toe with anything coming out of the biggest markets in the world."
