Jeff Kaplan Has Not Played Overwatch Since Leaving Blizzard in 2021
Former Overwatch director Jeff Kaplan revealed he completely disconnected from the shooter upon his departure, actively training online algorithms to block it.

Jeff Kaplan has not logged into Overwatch since resigning from Blizzard Entertainment in April 2021. In an interview with GameSpot, the former game director confirmed that he maintains a strict blackout on the title, intentionally avoiding gameplay, community forums, and online discussions.
"I've literally not played the game since April 2021," Kaplan said. When he departed, the damage hero Echo was the final character released under his watch. The game has since introduced new characters and system overhauls, but Kaplan has deliberately avoided seeing those updates firsthand.
The Lesson From World of Warcraft
Kaplan worked at Blizzard for nearly two decades after joining the company in May 2002. Before turning the remnants of the cancelled Project Titan into Overwatch, he spent six years on the World of Warcraft development team. Stepping away from that MMO in late 2008 proved emotionally difficult, but it provided a blueprint for how to handle his eventual departure from Blizzard.
"With Overwatch, I had a very almost clinical separation, knowing how the WoW thing had gone," Kaplan said. Lingering emotional attachment to Warcraft taught him that tracking a live-service project after stepping down caused unnecessary personal strain. When he resigned from Blizzard in 2021, he opted for a clean break instead.
Training Algorithms to Block Overwatch Content
Kaplan's separation extends beyond uninstalling the client. To protect his own headspace, he actively trains recommendation feeds to keep Overwatch content off his screens.
"I don't, for my own psyche, I don't read the subreddits. After I said my goodbye to competitive Overwatch and the Overwatch subreddit, I never go back and read," Kaplan explained. "I don't watch YouTube [videos]. I don't search for my name in Overwatch. I don't search for Overwatch. I sort of just disconnect."
He also manually flags recommendation systems that associate his personal accounts with the franchise. "I actually tell all the algorithms like, 'Yeah, I'm not really interested in Overwatch anymore. I know you think I'm the Overwatch guy, but like, that's just not for me anymore.'"
New Studio and The Legend of California
Kaplan previously cited severe corporate and financial pressures surrounding the Overwatch League as factors in his departure. Today, he runs an independent development studio working on an open-world action-survival shooter titled The Legend of California.
Publishers, platforms, and release windows for the project have not been announced. For Kaplan, focusing on the future requires accepting that his past work now belongs to someone else.
"It belongs to the team, belongs to the players, it belongs to Blizzard, but it doesn't belong to you," Kaplan said. "I don't want to be Uncle Rico. Overwatch happened. I was a part of it. There's a group there now and Overwatch is now about them."
